Top 10 Foreign Language Films Of All Time

Over the last few years foreign films have become more and more popular and with good reason too. Below is a list of 10 foreign language films that are all well worth a watch. With most of them being nominated and winning some of the top awards in film.

 

1.    Nikita (1990)

Nikita, a convicted criminal is given a new identity rather than going to jail and is trained to become a top-secret assassin. Nikita was nominated for a Golden Globe and won 5 awards.

2.    Love Me If You Dare (2003)

Follows best friends Julien and Sophie grow up together whilst playing their very own dare game, which progressively gets more and more dangerous as they get older. Staring Marian Cotillard.

3.    City Of God (2002)

Based on two boys who both grew up in the same rough neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro and their individual journeys as on became a drug dealer and the other a photographer. It was nominated for four Oscars and won an award for the ‘Best International Feature Film’.

4.    The Barbarian Invasions (2003)

Oscar winning French film shows the journey of a man dying of cancer who attempts to make peace with his estranged son, friends and ex wife. The BBC described it as “warm, wise and witty”.

5.    Amelie (2001)

Possibly one of the most famous foreign films, which was nominated for 5 Oscars. It’s a charming story of a French girl who helps strangers find love and happiness.

6.    Delicatessen (1991)

From director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who also directed Amelie. Is a surrealist black comedy about an ex-clown and a butcher who likes to deal with human flesh.

7.    La Vie En Rose (1997)

Follows seven-year-old Ludovic who believes he is a girl. Regularly dressing and acting as one and even stating he wants to marry the neighbours son. Unfortunately, his family and neighbours are not very sympathetic towards him.

8.    Headhunters (2011)

Nominated for a BAFTA Film Award, this Norwegian crime thriller follows a head-hunter who risks everything for a valuable painting. Guaranteed to keep your on your toes with plenty of unexpected humour as well.

9.    Amour (2012)

A moving love story of extraordinary intimacy. Last year it was nominated for several awards and won a number of tittles including best foreign language film at the BAFTA’s.

10. Volver  (2006)

This story explores the complex interactions and relationships between three generations of women in a Spanish family. Staring Penélope Cruz, it’s a gentle comedy that won Pedro Almodóvar’s best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival.
