Whether surfing is your thing or kicking back with a nice bottle of wine and some cheese, there is something for everyone in Australia. Here we take a look at our 10 favourite places to visit when in the Land Down Under.
1. Uluru at Sunset
Uluru glows red at sunset and really is a sight to behold. This UNESCO world heritage site is sacred to the aboriginal locals and is around half a billion years old. Why not take a guided tour and spot rare plants, animals and caves painted with rock art?
2. Sydney Opera House
Now Australia’s number one tourist destination this is probably one of the most instantly recognisable buildings in the world. Take a ferry under the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge and past the Opera House, and then enjoy a meal with a view at one of the many nearby restaurants.
3. Great Barrier Reef
Stretching over 2300 kilometres, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system on earth. It is made up of 900 islands and 2900 individual reefs. Whether you are an avid scuba diver, enjoy a snorkel or would rather view it from a helicopter, this is one place you should have on your bucket list.
4. Kakadu National Park
At Kakadu National Park you can be hiking through deserted sandstone one minute and bathing in waterfalls and pools the next. It is home to over 10,000 saltwater crocodiles, 280 types of bird and flatback turtles along with over 2000 plant species. Kakadu is almost 20,000 square kilometres (that’s roughly half the size of Switzerland!) and you can experience it on a 4WD tour, a scenic flight and a walking tour.
5. Gold Coast
Famed for its long sandy beaches and nightlife there is something here for everyone. From theme parks, to casinos, to mountain ridges, to the famous Surfers Paradise, you’ll never want to leave!
6. Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island is only accessible by ferry and has no cars on the island. The best way to explore is to hire a bike and visit the lighthouses, beautiful beaches and see if you can find some Quokkas along the way. There is a hotel on the island if you want to extend your stay but book well in advance as accommodation is highly sought after.
7. Fraser Island
Fraser Island has one of the longest beaches in the world at 75 miles long! This island is home to Sand Dunes, Dingo’s and shipwrecks and there is even an airport right on the beach.
8. Kangaroo Island
Just off the coast of South Australia, Kangaroo Island is a wildlife haven and is home to Pelicans, Kangaroos, Koalas and Seals and at sunset the “Remarkables” (granite boulders over 500 million years old!) are truly stunning!
9. Margaret River
This is a must for Wine lovers! There are countless wineries offering free tasting and tours along with a Cheese Factory and a chocolate factory! A food and wine lovers dream!
10. Kings Park and Botanic Gardens, Perth
Enjoy sweeping views of the Swan & Canning Rivers and the city skyline and visit the State War Memorial with a flame of remembrance and the famous whispering wall. This is a beautiful park for all of the family.
