What is Waitangi Day?

If you’re from the UK, you’d be forgiven if you’ve never heard of Waitangi Day before. Waitangi Day is considered to be New Zealand’s national day and has been observed as a public holiday since 1974. Phonetically pronounced why-tongue-ee, New Zealand’s national day is celebrated on 6th February every year and celebrates the day the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840.

After the British began to colonise New Zealand in the early 19th Century, wars raged between the native Maori people and the European settlers for decades until forty Maori Chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi – named after the place it was signed at. Each year the New Zealand Prime Minister will visit Waitangi and the building where the treaty was signed on Waitangi Day to commemorate the signing.
