5 Things to Do at Home Before Moving Abroad

Now you’ve made the exciting choice to move abroad, it can be easy to get bogged down with all the stressful aspects of moving overseas. It’s really important that you remember to have fun and make memories in the country you’re about to leave, though. After-all, all of those places you used to love visiting will no longer be on your doorstep!

Have a Clear Out
First off, you know that you’re going to be moving abroad, so you only want to take belongings you actually want with you on this fresh start. Dedicate a few weekends to clearing out your loft, garage and all those nooks and crannies where you store stuff.

This is the perfect opportunity for you to sell old toys and clothes, raising some extra pocket money for you to enjoy your time in the country before you leave. Plus, by reducing your belongings down, you’ll have less to worry about packing and getting shipped, which is a win for everyone.

Take Lots of Photographs
You don’t realise how emotionally attached you become to a house or a town until you’re leaving. The nursery where your children slept, that pub where you went on your first date – these are all places with memories you’re leaving behind.

Before you make the big move, make sure you get lots of photographs of your home and the town you live in. Not only will these be memories for you and your family, you’ll be able to show your new friends abroad too.

Dine at Your Favourite Restaurant
We all have a favourite place to eat. It might be a fancy restaurant or just a local takeaway – wherever you love to eat, make sure you take the time to enjoy the food before you leave.

If there’s a particular plate of food you love, you could even ask the chef if they’d be willing to share the recipe. That way you can make it in your new home.

Stock Up on Your Favourite Foods
Moving abroad often means moving to a country that doesn’t sell some of your favoured snacks or drinks, which can often be as heart-breaking as leaving your family! If you’re a Cadbury or digestive addict, stock up on your favourite snacks and take some with you. Just be careful that whatever you’re bringing is allowed in your new country.

Plan a Big Party
Arranging a time and a place to meet-up with all your friends and family before the big move can be difficult, especially when you have a lot of people to fit in. To make life easier for everyone, try to arrange a party where people can celebrate your new chapter together. This could be as simple as a family BBQ in the garden or hiring a venue and getting the caterers in. Whatever you choose, your friends and family will be grateful for the opportunity to send you off in style. If you have children, you may want to arrange a party for their friends too.
