Navigating New Waters: Understanding the BAR Global Shipping Conditions Update – February 2024

In an ever-evolving global landscape, the shipping industry has faced its share of trials, markedly shaping the experiences of consumers and businesses alike. The British Association of Removals (BAR) has released its February update on the state of the shipping market, providing vital insights into current challenges and offering guidance for those planning international moves. Here’s what you need to know:

Current Shipping Challenges

1. Rerouted Shipping Lanes: Recent security concerns in the Red Sea have led shipping lines to avoid the Suez Canal, opting for the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope. This decision, while ensuring the safety of vessels and crews, extends transit times by over two weeks and raises the possibility of delays and rolled cargo.

2. Surge in Surcharges: To cover the additional costs incurred by the longer journey, shipping lines have introduced emergency surcharges, including “war risk,” “equipment or operational recovery,” among others. These fees have significantly increased the cost of shipping, with some routes seeing surcharges as high as USD 2,500 per shipment.

3. The Fluidity of the Situation: The shipping industry is in a state of flux, with conditions changing as global events unfold. The rerouting of vessels and the imposition of surcharges are likely to remain for some time, even after the situation in the Suez Canal stabilizes.

Consumer Advice

The BAR update is not just a briefing on the current state of affairs but a toolkit for consumers navigating these turbulent times. Here’s how you can adapt:

Plan Ahead: The most immediate piece of advice is to plan your moves well in advance. The current market conditions require increased notice to secure space on vessels, especially for popular destinations.

Stay Informed: Keeping abreast of the latest updates from reputable sources like the BAR can help consumers anticipate changes and make informed decisions.

Expect Delays: Understanding that delays are a possibility can help set realistic expectations and mitigate frustration. It’s a time to practice patience and flexibility.

Consider Costs: With the addition of surcharges, the cost of moving has risen. Consumers should budget accordingly and discuss these changes with their moving company to avoid surprises

For those planning a move, the message is clear: stay informed, plan ahead, and communicate openly with your moving company. The landscape may be challenging now, but with careful navigation and expert guidance, we can weather this storm together.

    • Hi Kirstie, Yes not a problem. Transit time will be slightly longer, and they price will be higher due to an emergency surcharge added by the shipping lines due to them going a different route.
