Moving to Australia: Importing Christmas Decorations

Australia is well known for being very strict on what goods can and can’t enter the country. If you are thinking about moving to Australia from the UK and want to take your Christmas decorations with you, you need to make sure you check with your removals company what you can and can’t take. The risk of food, plant material and animal products from overseas could introduce serious pests and diseases into the country, devastating their valuable agricultural, tourism industries and unique environment.  Therefore all goods entering Australia are assessed by the Department of Agriculture’s biosecurity officers using X-rays, detector dogs and manual inspection. Some items may require treatment or may be destroyed or exported at your expense.

According to the Department of Agriculture Christmas decorations containing plant material are one of the most common items volunteered for destruction at the owner’s expense.

It is common to own some Christmas decorations that are sometimes made from organic items. For example wreaths and some tree decorations made from pine cones and nuts. Although these may have strong sentimental value and attachment, they will still be seized by the Department of Agriculture and individuals will be charged for the goods to be destroyed.

The following Christmas good are prohibited and may be seized by the Department of Agriculture:

–  Toys containing seeds and sand
–  Potpourri
–  Wreaths
–   Pine cones
–   Fresh mistletoe, holly and conifer
–   Fresh fruit and vegetables
–   Raw nuts
–   Salami and other meats
–   Goods made from or containing bark or straw
–   Hampers (containing food, meat or material)

Common Christmas gifts permitted into Australia:
–    Cooked Christmas cakes and puddings
–    Chocolates, confectionary (commercially produced and packaged)
–    Toys not containing seeds and sand.

  1. Good day,
I was wondering if you can help me with a question, I am moving to Australia and was wondering if I can ship my artificial pine needle Christmas tree and also my vacuum cleaner (of course cleaned well)?
I paid alot for these items and am having trouble figuring out whether I can ship them or not with my other household items.
    Thank you for your time.

    • Yes as long as they are artificial you will be fine. Also your vacuum will be more than fine. They are very popular items to send, but like you say will need to be well cleaned.

  2. Hi there we have glass baubles as part of our Christmas decorations and within some of the barbells are pieces of wood, would these be prohibited for us to export with us. We also have some decorations made by our daughter using lollipops stick while at school, would these also be prohibited.

    Thankyou and kind regards

  3. Hi John,

I have artificial pine cones on the Christmas tree and on the wreath.
Can I bring them or they are going to destroy them?

    • Yes artificial ones will be fine. However they may still get pulled for inspection and as long as they are artificial you will be fine.

  4. I bought 2 christmas lanterns made of capiz in the Philippines, will there be a problem if I bring it over in Australia?

  5. Hi. I have Christmas decorations with natural twine (hemp?) on them. Will these be allowed into Australia?
And some that are made with newspaper and modgepodge?
Also, do artificial trees need to be treated?
