A Guide To Comparing International Removal Quotes Fairly

Congratulations! You’ve already made one of the most important decisions of your life – to move from the UK and put down roots in a new country. Now you’re thinking about how to get there.

For you it’ll be an enjoyable, if somewhat tiring, process. Just pack your things and jump on the plane. But how about your belongings…those precious objects you can’t bear to leave behind?

You’re wise to be thinking about instructing the services of an International Removals specialist. But there are many to choose from, and they’re most certainly not all the same.

Comparing quotes is a worthwhile process, and the only way to ensure you’re getting value-for-money. It also gives you an opportunity to find out exactly what services are on offer. Here are some tips to help you make the right decision for your circumstances:

Check the quotes are for a like-for-like service. If one of the costings is wildly different to the others, it’s worth finding out why. Perhaps they’ve included extras, like lofts and garden areas, that the others haven’t – or vice versa.

Have a physical survey! Make sure you ask the company you select to come and visit you to carry out a survey. When you are having a survey they are not only checking what items you are taking but they are also checking property access and that there isn’t anything that needs special attention. If you do not have a survey, you may find you are hit with additional charges on the day of you move!

Is each company offering the same? This can vary tremendously – from full packing, crating, dismantling and special wrapping of certain items, to shuttle services and an outside elevator for easier access. How about parking fees or other additional charges? What’s included in the price? Often things like stair carry and long carry are not included if a physical survey hasn’t been completed.

Cheapest isn’t always best, and you’re far less likely to enjoy a stress-free move if you base your decision purely on price. Seek value-for-money instead. Choosing the cheapest company might also mean opting for the one with the lowest standards – and the highest risk of your items getting damaged. Some moving companies will use local firms to pick up your items. These companies are not always trained in export packing.

Hidden charges. Make sure you check the quote carefully. Some moving companies have a number of hidden charges. From hidden ‘admin fees’ to ‘Extreme Weather Cover’. Some companies will also try and sell ‘Premises Damage Insurance’ but most reputable international moving companies will be covered by their public liability insurance should anything happen.

Credentials. Some companies may appear to be top notch and highly-experienced, but are they members of professional associations? Some to look out for:

The British Association of Removers (BAR). Members are audited to ensure all aspects of their service – including facilities and equipment, staff, how they deal with complaints and their sales and advertising – are of a high enough standard. Overseas movers are also covered by an Advance Payment Guarantee – offering you protection should anything happen to your moving company, mid-relocation.

FIDI FAIM (developed by the International Federation of International Movers). The industry’s leading quality mark worldwide. Members are subject to rigorous assessments to ensure they meet the very high standards required.

At John Mason International, we believe our price is fair and reflects all that we offer. If you’ve been quoted lower for the same type and level of service from a company you feel equals our professionalism and quality, we will happily consider whether we can match that price. John Mason International only handle international removals which means that you can be safe in the knowledge that your move is being handled by overseas removals experts.
