A large amount of planning is involved when moving abroad and there is a great deal that must be considered before taking the leap, so it is more than likely that by the time you’ve stepped off the plane you are more than ready to start settling in. There are, however, a few things that you might not have been able to organise before your move, so it’s helpful to have a plan for when you arrive. You can use the ’10 things to do when you reach your destination’ list the below as a checklist to make sure that you have everything you need when you get there and to help you feel at home as quickly as possible.

Set Up a Bank Account

Some countries will let you set up a bank account up to 12 months before you arrive such as Australia and New Zealand. There are some key benefits to this; firstly you can transfer your money over at a time when the exchange rate is most favourable. Secondly it will make things easier upon arrival.

Some countries however will not let you set up a bank account until you are living there, so unfortunately popping to the bank might have to be your first port of call. Make sure you take your time when choosing which branch to bank with and don’t forget, you’ll need to take with you a proof of address and identification when setting up your account.

Rent a Car

You can often arrange car rental before you reach your destination, but if you haven’t had the chance or it has not been possible, it’s probably worth doing soon after you arrive – especially if you’re not in walking distance of your local amenities. Again, take the time to shop around to ensure you’re getting the best deal possible.

Find Your Local Doctor

Who knows when you might need to pay a visit to your local doctor, so locating them as soon as you can is a good idea. The last thing you want to be doing is finding and signing up to your nearest practice when you’re not feeling great, so make sure you do it quickly after arriving.

Locate Your Nearest Food Shop

The sooner you know your way around and familiarise yourself with the local shops, the sooner you’ll start feeling at home. Find your nearest shop and stock up the fridge with a mix of local food and home comforts.

Set Up a Telephone Line

Does your mobile work there? It’s important to check straight away. Whilst you might have already spoken to your provider to let them know, mistakes can be made! It’s also a good idea to set up a landline in your new home for emergencies and to allow you to make cheaper calls when possible.

Get Connected

Save your data and make sure you’ve got WiFi in your new home! Whether you’re using the internet to keep in touch with family and friends back home or for work purposes, it can be a pain to set up but once it’s done, it’s done!

Get to Know Your Neighbours

You never know when you might need to call on a neighbour for a favour, so introduce yourself as soon as it is convenient. If you want to feel at home and welcome in a new area it’s worth getting on the right side of those living on the same street.
