Moving to Australia by Bobinoz.com
Below you can read about what life is really like in Australia by Bob, owner of the migrant website Bob in Oz, who moved from the UK to Australia.
Bob’s England to Australia migrant story
Having lived in England all of my life and fast approaching the age of 50, I decided I fancied a change. After all, wouldn’t it be nuts to spend your whole life living in just one country? We are only here once, after all. My wife, on the other hand, had lived abroad on two previous occasions, but that didn’t stop her from itching to make another move as well.
Together then, we decided on a life changing move and after a great deal of discussion and research, we decided that the South of France was the place for us. Then, quite out of the blue, my wife’s brother and his family moved to Australia with their young children and that led us into taking, eventually, three holidays in the land down under to see them. In between those holidays we had finally decided on the exact village in the South of France we were going to move to and we were already planning our life by the Med.
On our third holiday in Australia though, a strange thing happened to me as I was sitting on a bus bound for Brisbane city. As we were stood stationary at a bus stop, the bus all of a sudden lurched forward, stalled, and then some kind of vehicle alarm began to sound off. After some brief clunking around, all was silent again, the bus was restarted and the driver made a quick announcement, mumbling “sorry, wrong button”; this led to much chuckling around the bus. That got me thinking; if this had been France would the driver have made a joke about stalling the bus? And if he had, would I have understood it? You see, I don’t speak much French.
It was during that third holiday in Australia that both my wife and I finally fell in love with the country and within two years we were living there as permanent residents. We are now proudly Australian citizens, we’ve been here six years and we still pinch ourselves to be living in what we think is paradise. We wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.
