If you are moving to Shanghai, China using our sea freight services, the Port of Entry for your shipment will be the Port of Shanghai. The Airport of Entry if you have an air freight shipment will be Shanghai Airport.
The documents required for importing your effects into Shanghai are as follows: original passport with Residence Permit (valid for one year), original Work Permit book (one year valid), Inventory and a completed customs declaration form. Please note that our destination partner in Shanghai will need to hold your original passport and working permit book for two to three working days.
A pre-application before the formal import permit application is not necessary if you are moving to Shanghai, this applies for shipments to Beijing however.
Customs Clearance – Timescales
Normal clearance time for a sea shipment is approximately 5-8 working days after your consignment arrives in Shanghai. Please allow a further 7 days for delivery.
Normal clearance time for an air shipment is 1-3 working days after arrival in Shanghai. Please allow a further 7 days for delivery.
Import Duty
Alcohol is allowed to be imported into Shanghai but will be subject to import duty. The amount payable will depend on the alcohol percentage.
Books, CDs and DVDs
There are restrictions with regards to the number of books, CDs and DVDs which you can bring into China. Please be aware of this when planning your move. Your International Consultant will also advise you of this regulation during the initial planning of your move to Shanghai. The limits are as follows:
- CDs: maximum 200
- DVDs: maximum 100
- Books: maximum 200

It is permited to import food items into Shanghai for a sea freight shipment. It is not permited to do so for an air shipment.
