Moving Advice

Top Self-Packing Tips

When it comes to moving house one of the biggest stresses is packing. We usually recommend leaving it to the professionals, especially with export packing. However there are times when you may prefer to pack yourself. Here are a few tips to help you through this stressful task – hopefully making your life (and the move) that little bit easier!

1. Lists

First things first, make a list. Or quite possibly even a number of lists. You don’t want to leave packing to the last minute so make priority lists of what can be packed at different dates prior to moving. This way you know what needs packing and when for, keeping you in control and reducing stress levels!

2. Boxes

Boxes are your best friends when it comes to moving and you want to make sure you have plenty. So at the stage of creating lists it’s worth going around your home trying to calculate how many boxes you are going to need and making sure you have them before you start sorting through and packing. Oh and don’t forget some trusty brown tape and a black marker pen!

3. Make Some Money

When it comes to the collection of items you won’t be taking with you don’t let the dump be the first thought. Take some time sorting through the stuff and seeing if there is anything you could sell on or even take to a car boot sale. This way your stuff won’t end up on a rubbish heap and you’ll be able to make a little bit of extra cash too!

4. Get Sensible

It’s best to start with one room at a time and by doing this you won’t get distracted and start mixing items and boxes that should be separate. Plus, it means only one room at a time will be filled with boxes and mess. Linking back to the boxes and the marker pen, make sure you label boxes super clearly as this reduces having to reluctantly open boxes in search for certain items. Finally, pack all important documents including birth certificates, bank statements, insurance details etc etc all in a box or place together, which you can ensure will be kept safe at all times.

Hopefully these tips will give you a rough idea on where and how to begin when it comes to self-packing. If you do require any more information please do not hesitate to get in contact with us or search our website more information.
