Expat destinations in Brazil

With the world media spotlight focused on Brazil at the moment due to the FIFA World Cup, we thought we would take a look at some expat destinations in Brazil.

Brazil is a vibrant, colourful nation with a varied landscape and many areas of natural beauty. Expats would no doubt be happy in many locations including the most popular Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia and Sao Paulo. Some other interesting expat destinations include:

Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul

The Southern Brazilian port city of Porto Alegre is a principal cultural, political and business hub in Brazil, it is also one of the wealthiest cities in the country. What is also notable about this city is that many inhabitants are of European descent. This is due to immigration from Europe here in the late 19th Century which is also evident in the architecture around the city. Some of the sights of interest include the largest lake in Brazil, Lagoa dos Patos. In addition, Farroupilha Park is a breath of fresh air in the city and popular for lunchtime walks.

Trancoso, Bahia

The popular holiday resort of Trancoso with its white sandy beaches is increasing in popularity with expats as the real estate industry becomes more developed. The Quadrado (square) in Trancoso is a UNESCO protected site.

Florianópolis (Floripa), Santa Catarina

The city of Florianópolis is separated, half is located on the island of Santa Catarina and the other half on mainland Brazil . The city is popular with expats looking for a good quality of life, there are a total of 42 beaches on the island all within an hour’s drive away from the city, so lots of options for places to relax. It is also a popular party destination so is popular with young expats and second home owners.

Curitiba, Parana

This rapidly growing city is often cited as a great example of sustainable urban development including an effective and efficient rapid bus transportation system and various environmental initiatives. Although it has trebled in size over the last 25 years, careful urban planning has meant that the city has not lost its character nor suffer from the usual problems that rapid urbanisation can cause.
