Culture Shocks of Australia

With around 1.2 million people immigrating to Australia between 2000 and 2010, with most of them being from the U.K, it’s no surprise that it’s a top destination to move too. But they’re many facts that you might not be aware of about Australia, but we’re here to fill you in.

Wealth

We’re aware you can live a better, more relaxed life in Australia – mainly due to the sun! But their average gross national income, according to the World Bank is $46,200 where the U.K is just $37,780.

Social Customs & Behaviour

Australia offers a very tolerant society, which is open to different cultures and beliefs. Many Australians believe looking at the eyes of the people they are talking with shows a great sign of respect as well as an indication their that they are listening.

The Slang

This can take some getting used to, but you should be able to get a rough understanding fairly quickly. To get an idea of some of the common slang, here is a good fact sheet of examples from the University of Tasmania.

Australia & Anzac Day

Take note of January 26th as this is Australia Day, which is a public holiday, that marks the first settlement in Australia by Europeans. On April 25th is Anzac day, which is a day where Australians remember those who fought for their nation in World War 1.

In terms of moving to Australia, you will of course need your visa to be in place. You can apply yourself or use a migration agent. If using a migration agent, make sure to use a MARA (Migration Agents Registration Authority) registered agent.  There are six main different types of visa you can apply for which are:

1. Employer Sponsored Workers

2. Professionals and other Skilled Migrants

3. Business Visa

4. Medical Work Visa

5. Investor Retirement Visa

6. Working Holiday Visa
