South Africa offers UK immigrants a world of possibilities and scenery, all within the boundaries of a single nation. Favourable climate, a more relaxed atmosphere, and cultural diversity are only some of the reasons to consider moving to South Africa.

English is language of choice in both business and most social settings. However, you’ll quickly find the nation is home to 11 native languages. Although South Africa does have wide communicative diversity, most citizens will speak at least some English.

Despite the cultural diversity and mixture of first and third world flavours, most emigrants adapt to the South African lifestyle quickly and almost effortlessly. The low cost of living is attractive to retirees while abundant job opportunities attract the younger generation.

The South African economy has survived the global economic downturn nearly unscathed and has even shown signs of impressive growth. The economy is protected by moderate regulation in the financial sector and conservative exchange control. Further, citizens and residents are protected by the new democratic government’s constitution heavily favouring minority rights and personal property.

Interested in sports and an outdoor lifestyle? So are South Africans. You’ll find many opportunities for joining organised recreational teams. The national sports are Cricket, Rugby, and Football.

When searching for a residence in South Africa, many immigrants are attracted to purchasing their home over renting. Competitive pricing and investment potential make this a popular option. Additionally, there are no government restrictions regarding non-residents owning property. The only property restriction concerns the percentage of financing available (50%) for non-residents.

Contact your closest South African consulate in advance of your move. They can assist with submitting the required applications and the documentation needed.

Shipping to South Africa

FCL (Full Container Load) Service / Sole Use Container

An FCL service is common for families moving the majority of contents from their house. As a general rule, the contents of a 3 bedroom house can fit into a 20ft container. During a home survey, the Surveyor will explain the different shipping options to you and will advise which method would be most appropriate for the volume of effects which you are taking.

Groupage / Shared Container Service
If you are not taking a large volume of effects with you, it is likely that a groupage service
will be most convenient for you. A few shipments are ‘grouped’ together. This means that you can split the freight costs between other consignments. It is therefore usually a less expensive option for shipping small or part house consignments. John Mason International operate a regular groupage schedule to South Africa so this option is always available to you.
