Skilled Trade Workers in Demand in Australia

The most recent Manpower Talent Shortage Survey has been published outlining the strong demand for tradespeople in Australia to fill skills shortages.

A tradesman’s role is geographically fixed and therefore can’t be off-shored whereas other jobs can be out-sourced to other countries. Therefore, this has led to an urgent need to make sure that such roles have a constant supply of skilled labour available. As more and more of the ‘baby boomer’ population of skilled tradespeople being to retire, this need will increase.

The skills shortage outlined above means that Australia will become increasingly reliant on countries such as the UK to recruit skilled tradespeople. This is good news for carpenters, electricians and plumbers looking to start a new life down under in the future.

Manpower is a recruitment organisation based in Australia. White papers concerning insights into the labour market are produced and published on their website. Further information can be found on the website: www.manpower.com.au.

Australian Migration Survey – LSIA

When moving to Australia, you may wish to research migrant experience surveys and reports. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship in Australia (DIAC) published ‘Life in a New Land: The Experience of Recent Migrants to Australia’ to report on how migrants have settled in to their new life in the country. Although the study was published in 2002, it still contains relevant information for today’s migrants.

A full copy of the publication can be found on the DIAC website – www.immi.gov.au. The study looks at various issues including the migration process and decisions, housing needs and overall satisfaction with life in Australia.

Two surveys were conducted over a number of years (Cohort 1: 1993/4 and Cohort 2: 1999/2000). Interviews were conducted 6 months after arrival and 12 months after arrival (and 24 months after for Cohort 1). The result was the publication of the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Australia (LSIA) which provides useful insights for anyone moving to Australia.

A summary of the survey can be found below:

Presence of Family Members

The presence of family already settled in Australia continues to be a major draw for migrants. Family members can assist with settling in issues such as finding a place to live, employment and providing general information.

Housing

Overall the quality of housing in Australia is stated by migrants to be high. Housing is important in terms of the overall settlement experience, in particular the speed at which suitable housing can be found is also a factor. Family members can also assist with this issue.

Reasons for Migration

The most dominant factors for migration to Australia were: climate, environment and the natural beauty of the country and the associated lifestyle factors resulting from this such as peaceful surroundings. ‘Friendly people’ is another positive element about Australia highlighted by the migrants surveyed. This demonstrates that economic reasons are not always the dominant factor for migration.

Choice of State

The main reasons given by migrants for the choice of State which they relocated to varied according to the state. The trends were as follows:

  • Migrants moving to Victoria cited ‘moving to be near family and friends’ as their primary motivation.
  • New South Wales was chosen principally for job opportunities.
  • Queensland and Western Australia were chosen for the climate and associated lifestyle.
  • Other reasons were cited for choosing the remaining Australian States.

Satisfaction with the Migration Experience

Very few migrants reported being dissatisfied with their experience and were generally happy that they had made the decision to relocate. The majority of people interviewed also said that they would encourage others to migrate to Australia also.

Summary

In summary, the report found that the objectives of the Australian Government in terms of gaining economic benefit from migrants as well as assisting family re-unions have been accomplished.

Customs Offices closed in Shenzhen, China during August

Are you moving to Shenzhen, South-East China? If so, please be advised that we have been informed by our destination agents in China that Customs offices will be closed in Shenzhen for the period 12th August 2011 – 23rd August 2011. This is expected to cause delays to shipments due to the fact that consignments will not be cleared at this time. In addition, security inspections will be increased during this period, further delaying the import and clearance process.

The delays above are due to the 26th Summer International Universiade which is being hosted by the city. The Universiade is a sports competition for athletes from universities worldwide to compete in athletics such as track and field events.

If you are moving to Shenzhen, China, we recommend that you do not move or send your shipment during this period due to the delays outlined above which may result in additional charges such as demurrage. Your Move Manager will contact you if the above is applicable to your shipment.  Any further updates from our destination agents in Shenzhen will be published on this news post.

British Police needed in South Australia (SAPOL Recruitment)

A report in Adelaide Now has stated that policemen and policewomen are in demand in South Australia due to a local shortage. It has been estimated that 90 police officers are required this year to work in South Australia.

Although the primary objective is to recruit locally, a severe shortage in applications has meant that this year, this has not been possible. The decision to recruit from the UK is due to the failure to recruit suitable candidates from New Zealand.

SAPOL (South Australian Police) are due to be in London at some point this year to recruit potential migrants. The first intake is expected to be next year (February 2012) when each new arrival will begin a 10 week training course before commencing general policing duties. Many policemen and women in the UK are attracted to South Australia due to the climate and lifestyle.

Further information can be found on the SA Police website: www.sapolice.sa.gov.au or on the SA Police Recruitment Website: www.achievemore.com.au  – click on UK Recruitment. If you are moving to Australia, click here for further information on Shipping to Australia.

The study provides information on overall migration patterns which may be helpful for anyone planning a relocation or international staffing programme.

The study found that there are increasing numbers of US Citizens moving to the UK. Europe was found to be the main destination for Americans moving overseas. This trend has generally been consistent for the last ten years.

The top five destinations were as follows:

  1. United Kingdom
  2. Germany
  3. China
  4. Australia
  5. France

Asian Countries

Asian countries are becoming more popular with US residents moving overseas, China in particular. Other countries climbing the rankings for this study include Singapore, Japan and Malaysia. Such countries were not in the top ten destination list ten years ago but started to emerge as popular destinations around six years ago.

The trend towards China corresponds with the fact that many US based companies are looking to gain experience in emerging markets.

Central and South America

The only Central and South American country which appeared on the list of top desination countries for US residents moving abroad was Brazil, which was at number 12. In the past, Moving to Costa Rica from the US was quite common but in recent years, this trend has declined.

Origin Moves from the US

In the report, Germany was found to be the number one country of origin for people moving to the US. Germany was closely followed by the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

International Migration Study Methodology

Over 15,000 household moves carried out for major organisations were analysed in the study. The research data was collected in 2010 and published in July 2011 by Unigroup Worldwide UTS.

Delays to outbound shipments from Shanghai

Delays have been reported for outbound shipments out of Shanghai. The delays are expected to last throughout the summer period. This is due to a combination of a shortage of containers at the port and a backlog of shipments at Customs in Shanghai.

With regards to the backlog which has been reported at Customs, the bonded warehouse used for Customs Clearance is currently at maximum capacity. Therefore, this situation is causing delays which may extend the customs clearance time by three of four working days (usual customs clearance time is five working days). If you are moving to Shanghai, please contact your Move Manager for additional information on timescales.

On a further note, it has also been reported that there is a container shortage at Shanghai port. This applies to containers which are suitable for household goods. This may cause further delays for outbound shipments from Shanghai.
