BAR Code of Practice

BAR is the principal trade organisation for removal companies in the UK and constantly works to promote excellence in the Removals Industry.

BAR operates in order to protect both its members and customers. To reinforce this ethos, the BAR Code of Practice was created with the objective of providing a framework of best practice which must be adhered to by all BAR member companies. A description and summary of the code can be found below:

The BAR Code of Practice is a set of standards which protects customers for domestic and International Removals. There are two principal components of the code. The first is a set of regulations and a commitment to high service levels which all BAR Members must comply with and the second is the provision of a financial protection guarantee for the customer.

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute monitors the performance of all BAR Members, to make sure that they are operating within the BAR Code of Practice and that the Code is working properly in the interests of the consumer. You can help by completing the customer satisfaction survey provided by your BAR Member.

The Code sets the benchmark for standards in the moving industry. All BAR members must abide by the code or risk losing their membership. Some of the key commitments and responsibilities of the code include:

  • To not provide misleading or inaccurate advertising / promotional material
  • To offer insurance to customers and to explain all relevant terms and conditions clearly
  • To recruit and employ professional, competent and knowledgeable staff who also provide high standards of customer service
  • To provide clear pricing, removal plans and descriptions
  • To resolve problems quickly and in a friendly and compassionate manner

Financial protection is also included in the BAR Code of Practice. This includes a cash-back guarantee against cancellation.
